
Lombardy in northern Italy, was so named after the region where the Lombards first settled after their invasion in 568. It is from this culturally rich region that the surname Barbuscio originates. Southern Italy at this time was occupied by the Byzantines. The Lombards have often been compared to the Goths, and their name may be derived from "Longobardi" which translates as "long beards." They successfully integrated themselves into Roman civilization by adopting Roman language and culture. As a result of their complete integration, very little remains today of the ancient Lombardic culture.
Italy was invaded by the Franks in 754 and 756 and was subjected to the rule of the Frankish King Pepin. Later, Charlemagne invaded Italy and in 774 Pavia, the most prominent cities in Lombardv surrendered to his armies and Charlemagne became king of the Lombards and Franks. It was in this region we first record the name Barbuscio found in Cremona a city in Lombardy, capital of' the province of Cremona. Founded by the Romans in 218 it has a checkered history. Virgil studied here. The finest building is the cathedral in the Lombard Romanesque style. It was started in l l07. There are many frescos from the 16th century. It was Austrian in 1814, but became a part of Italy in 1859. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of' recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.
Variations in surnames occur because of spelling changes in written transcriptions and because of differences in local dialect. Although many Italian surnames can have many forms, including Barbuscio, also included in the same lineage was Barbo,Barbuscio, Barbozini, Barbolani, Barnieri, and others.
The earliest record found of this Barbuscio lineage is in Cremona in Lombardy where they were anciently seated in 1145 when Ludovico was primo Marchese and when Barbo of Pietro of Cremona was the Duke of Parma. They were later found in Milan Die Barbo of' Milan at Binanova, Torrenova, Pesaruolo. They held territories and were recorded on the tax rolls for that region. From their early beginnings in Milan, for the next few centuries, the family name also acquired other interests as branches of this fine old Italian family established themselves throughout Italy. Many were displaced by the many conflicts of the time, the economics, or better opportunities as they pursued religion, politics or acquired better estates.
Lombardy came under the rule of 'Spain in 1535 after the death of Francesco Sforza, and Milan was given to Philip, the son of Emperor Charles V. High taxes were imposed by the Spanish.
Spanish rule in Lombardv continued until 1713, when the Austrian house of the Habsburgs took control of' Lombardy from 1713 until 1796. In 1796, Napoleon invaded Austrian Lombardy and conquered northern Italy. Napoleon controlled Lombardy until the Congress of' Vienna in 1814, and Austria then ruled the region until 1859, when an agreement between Count Camillo Benso di Cavour and the French emperor was reached to free Italy from Austrian leadership. It was at this time that Lombardy came under Italian rule.
Today, Lombardy, or Lombardia, is one of the most prosperous regions in Italy in terms of its industry and commerce. Lombardy embraces the Italian provinces of Brescia, Cremona, Milano, Pavia, and Varese to name a few. Lombardy contains several of The most prosperous cities, the most famous being Milan.
The influence of the ancient Lombards may be still be historically traced through the background of place names and through laws and legal customs. During the middle ages there were many distinguished people of the name and notable was the Barbo family of Milan.
Before the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, very few Italians ventured to America, and until Italy's unification in 1861, emigration was limited. The pattern of emigration changed rapidly from the 188O's onward. In the census of 188O, there were forty thousand Italians in America, one thousand of 'which were living in or near New York. Members of the Barbuscio lineage arrived in North America during this period. Many settlers were recorded from the end of the 19th century in the great migration from Italy to the New World. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard principally in New, York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. and the migration continued until the middle of the twentieth century.
Contemporary notables bearing the Barbuscio name, or a variation, include many distinguished contributors to world culture,science and society including dignitaries who made significant contributions to society.
Research has determined the above Coat of Arms to be the most ancient recorded for the family surname Barbuscio.
